Ashraf Kateb, a Syrian-German violinist, was born in Aleppo, Syria.
He studied the violin at music academies in Aleppo, Moscow, Berlin and Cracow (Poland).
He received the first prize, for three consecutive years, in the Syrian Competition for Children. He was awarded a grant to participate in the Cracow Festival for Gifted Children, where he ranked second among participants representing 82 countries.
Ashraf lives in Berlin since 1992, as a soloist and chamber music player, teaching the violin along with a number of musical activities.
He participated in many international festivals, was the only Arab artist in the Philharmonic of the Nations, and performed with many celebrities in the world of music, such as Justus Franz, Leonard Bernstein, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Sir Gorge Solti, Mistislav Rostropovitch, Igor Oistrakh, Gidon Kremer and others.
He worked for many years with sopranos Anna Maria Kaufmann and Deborah Sasson.
Since 1997, he is promoting “Arabic Music and the World”, which is a pioneer international project. He collected, played and disseminated the works of leading Arab composers, as an endeavor to acquaint the world with the works of creative Arab musicians.
He produced his first CD, Gesture, in 2001 with the Syrian-German pianist, Gaswan Zerikly. The CD was a great international success and a unique work of art in the history of music at large. They presented the violin and piano works of seven Arab composers from Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Morocco.
Ashraf performs concerts throughout the world, with various musicians, including the Aruso Duo (Ashraf with the Russian pianist Iwan Urwalow) and the Uzbek pianist Ulugbek Palvanov.
Since 2004, he is the artistic director of the Star Tenor, Erkan Aki.
In October 2009, he was awarded the Silver Shield of the City of Aleppo, discerned by the Mayor and Chairman of the City Council, in recognition of his efforts to promote the musical culture.
